US corporate profits was about 4-5% of the total debt or approximate money in circulation until 1980 (blue). Higher interest rates (red) apparently caused the profits to fall to around 2%. When businesses pay more interest on debt, it would impact profits, but the lower profits persisted even when interest rates fell. It has climbed to about 3% now. The money in circulation is not utilized well if businesses only make 3% profit out of it.
The average US house price declined since 1980 relative to money supply/debt, taking into account population growth. Over time one might expect for the same proportion of the money in circulation and debt to be spent on housing, but it actually declined. If the extra money did not go into assets, was it used to fund running expenses?
Total mortgage debt relative to total debt (blue) remained constant from 1980 to 2008, but the average house price multiplied by number of households to total debt (red) declined. The growth in money supply usually determines the nominal inflation rate. That implies that the total value of housing has not kept pace with inflation, except for homes bought with debt.
